A Number Game

It is very astonishing to witness the ongoing phase of hue and cry over the Karmapa issue in Gangtok wherein some vested interest are hell bent on espousing their hidden agenda vide the organising of a rally on Sunday, September 26, 2010 at Gangtok. It is very unfortunate that this vested interest should degrade the sanctity of the institution of HH the Gyalwang Karmapa to a mere number game in its zeal to ‘democratise’ the sanctity of whole process. Most strange that there never occur in the past that any Karmapa should be recognised and enthroned on the basis of head count as some vested interest are desperately trying now.

It is a historical fact that the identification and recognition process of Karmapa have exclusively remained under the strict domain of the Karma Kagyue School with no external interference. This entire process includes no role of HH the Dalai Lama in any manner. However, for the first time, a claimant to the seat of 17th Gyalwang Karmapa has officially been recognised by the Dalai Lama, and the Chinese Government, a practice something alien to the Kagyue lineage.

Moreover, it is for the first time that lay people has been authorised to be a part to authenticate the sacredness and genuineness of Karmapa not becoming of the established Kagyue tradition. This neo-creation is infact a total defilement to substitute the same with the so-called democratisation of this sacred mechanism in connivance with polluted ordeals and entity with the Kagyue Regency.

It is very essential to remember here that historically and traditionally, Karmapa never required endorsement or majority support of the people as is being done at this degenerated time. It is very unfortunate that we are determine to deliver such contaminated form of our very identity, lineage and transmission to our own posterity.

Had there been the authority of the Denjong Chogyal, there would never have arisen the present Karmapa imbroglio and many other related problems due to insufficient grasp of our the existing policy makers on Buddhism.

Given the current trend of enthusiasm of the Phodong Monastic Order  in rejuvenating the Denjong Tenpo, it would be most appreciable for them to locate the precious Buddha statute that was been given back  to Denjong and ultimately given under charge of Phodong monastery in the early 1990s by the legendary Alexander David Neel. The time for such verification is most perfect given the display of their “dedication” at this point of time.

In this regard, it is appreciable if the Phodong monastic authority could elaborate or enlighten the Sikkimese people on the exact position of this precious statue which is of historical value to us. It is rather more desirable that the governments of Sikkim and India initiate necessary actions to locate the same, a value less object of universal importance gifted to Her Eminence Alexander David Neel by the His Majesty the Miwang Denjong Chogyal Sidkeong Tulku Namgyal as a gesture of recognition to her Buddhist potentials. If needed, appropriate action and most possibly a high level CBI enquiry should be initiated.
