A RENOWNED Buddhist leader will give a public talk next week at the invitation of a Lama from Bolton.
His Holiness Gyalwa Karmapa, whose name means “master of enlightened activity”, is the head of a school of Tibetan Buddhism known as the Karma Kagyu Lineage.
He will be spending five days in Manchester as part of his summer tour of Europe and the Far East.
Gyalwa Karmapa, who last visited the city in 2009, will be giving a talk called “The Way of the Buddha” at Manchester Central on Tuesday.
He was invited to give the public talk by spiritual leader Lama Jampa Thaye, who was born and raised in Bolton and is now one of the foremost teachers of Buddhism in the western world.
Lama Jampa Thaye studied Buddhist history at the University of Manchester and lectured for more than 20 years at the city’s universities.
Speaking about Gyalwa Karmapa’s forthcoming visit, Lama Jampa Thaye said: “His Holiness the 17th Karmapa is not only one of the greatest living Buddhist masters but one who is able to speak directly to the hearts of modern men and women.”
Jonathan Macaskill, centre co-ordinator at the Kagyu Ling Buddhist Centre, which has helped organise the visit, said: “We are delighted to be hosting His Holiness Karmapa’s second visit to Manchester.
