The spiritual leader of the Kagyu sect of Buddhism- one of the four major schools of Tibetan Buddhism- Karmapa Lama has expressed displeasure over the media coverage of war and strife all across the world, saying that the media cannot dictate or influence the national affairs of a country.
Answering queries of the people, the young Lama, who is recognised by both the Dalai Lama and Beijing, said that the media have a tremendous role, but sometimes it attaches so much significance to the coverage of war and disturbances that it appears as these disturbances should be encouraged.
"The media cannot dictate or control or influence the national affairs of a country, nevertheless it can have a tremendous role," the Karmapa said.
"It appears that tremendous importance is attached by the media in highlighting (war and disturbances), which makes it look like that it should be encouraged," the Holy Leader added.
The 16-year-old Karmapa- Ugyen Trinley Dorje- was here for the entire month of December to give teachings, where the founder of Buddhism Gautam Buddha achieved 'enlightenment' some 2500 years ago.
He also called for the need of taking up of the responsibilities by the public at large along with the leaders.
On being asked by a Croatian journalist that how peace could be made permanent in a country like hers that has witnessed wars and strife in the last decade, the Karmapa said that a combination of 'sacrifices' made by the public and the leaders was "important for the greatest good of all and to bring productive results".
"We need to realise that responsibilities of both public and the leaders are important, but public has a more tremendous importance in creating awareness", the 17th Karmapa said.
Speaking on a wide range of issues, including the situations experienced by the present day youth, the Lama said that he himself fits in that category of youth of "raw emotions and very strong feelings," adding, "a two-fold peace must be practised that includes "peace within and reflection of the peace to the outside world".
Urging the youth to think about what they would be leaving behind them and the future generation, he said, "We should realise that we exist in the context of the society and its interdependence, and should become more aware and more alert of our surroundings".
Cautioning that the present situation in the world may worsen more, he said, "We are in a state of concern, worry and agony; not only about the present situation but the possibility of turning to worse".
He also professed vegetarianism and said he himself was trying to practise it, which the people should try to respect. (ANI)

May the supreme jewel bodhicitta
that has not arisen, arise and grow.
And may that which has arisen not diminish,
but increase more and more.
